ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMME

There are various options for the person interested in studying in a hotel management school. You can enter an associate degree programme in hotel and motel management. The length and nature of the programme vary depending on which school you choose. However, on the average, you will be able to get your degree in about a year and a half. Most schools cover general subjects together with classes geared specifically towards hotel management. In addition to this, most schools also offer hands on management courses to their students. Graduates of associate degree programmes in hotel management will be ready to take on entry-level positions in the hotel and motel industry.

BACHELORS’ DEGREE PROGRAMME

If you are aiming to go to advance levels in the hotel management industry, you may opt to obtain your bachelors’ degree in this field. Rather than obtaining a different university or college degree in a more general field, you can go straight to a hotel school. Similar to other bachelors’ degree programmes, a bachelors’ degree in hotel management requires more time than an associate degree programme to complete. On the average, it may take 4 years to obtain your degree.

Part of your training will require time in classrooms for lectures, much like other degrees. You will also learn general subjects as well as courses relating to management in general. More than that, however, you will be focusing on various specialisations. These courses will focus on the specific aspects of hotel management. This could include business management, restaurant management, accounting, hospitality services, human resources, purchasing, sales, and more. Of course, part of your schooling will include on the job training sessions as well. With a bachelors’ degree under your belt, you will be more equipped to handle real life situations when you enter the hotel industry.

MASTERS IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT

In addition to a bachelors’ degree, any student with a degree can opt to enter a master’s level programme. These kinds of programmes focus on highly specialised skills and knowledge. Professionals who wish to further their knowledge in the field of hotel management will be better off with a masters’ degree. Subjects include entrepreneurship, marketing, information systems management, operations management, real estate management, as well as investment. Those who are aiming for upper-level positions in hotel management should consider a masters’ degree in this field.

 Choosing a Hotel School

Choosing Hotel School

There is no doubt about it, one of the most critical points in a student’s life is wherein he has to choose the school he would spend the next 4 years or so of his life. The academic institution he chooses would largely shape his character, build his knowledge, and hone his skills. These things, in turn, would play an important part in a person’s career later on in his life. As such, when it comes to choosing a hotel school for yourself, you have to consider several things in order to ensure that you have made the right choice.

First ask whether the school has an accreditation of some sort from an independent body. It would even be better if the accrediting body operates internationally. This is one way of gauging the quality of education that you will be getting from the school. Make sure that the accreditation is for real and not for display only.

You should also take a look into the different partnerships that the school has in place. Partnerships should not be limited to other hotel schools all over the world but with actual entities in the hotel and hospitality industry as well. This works to your advantage as a student in several ways. First, with partnership with other schools, you may be able to participate in study abroad programs. This experience will help you gain a broader perspective of the hotel industry worldwide. Second, with partnerships with hotels and other business entities, you will be able to participate in internship programs which will prepare you for when you actually enter the industry. More than that, these partnerships may even forge a way for you to enter the industry with more ease.

Another consideration you should have in choosing a school is the facilities and staff. What is the teacher to student ratio? How big are the classes? What facilities does the school have to aid instruction? How extensive is their library collection? Think of all the pertinent questions you can and find the answers before event thinking of applying to that school.

Good luck with your school hunting!

 London Hotel School

London Hotel School

Located in Kensington Olympia in the heart of London, the London Hotel School is one of the best schools in the country to go to. One of the best things about studying at the London Hotel School is the fact that you can be assured of having no more than 20 students in one class. That would mean that you will get the personalised instruction that you deserve.

Their facilities allow students to bring their own notebook computers to use all around the school. High speed wireless connections are available for anyone who wishes to connect to the Internet. If you do not have your own notebook, there is a study area as well as a computer area. Both are free for all students.

The London Hotel School offers two paths for students. The first one is the UK National Higher Diploma in International Hotel or Hospitality Management. This path takes two years to complete, including a year of internship. During the first year of study, the student will have to attend classes on theory. It is in the second year that you will be given the chance to apply all that you’ve learned in the classroom by working as an intern in a hotel. In this path, you have the choice between International Hotel Management and Hospitality Management.

The second path is the American Hotel and Lodging Association Diploma in Hospitality Management. This programme only requires one year to finish. However, you may choose to go for another year of internship, which is purely optional. Courses that are covered by this programme include Front Office Management, Food and Beverage Management, Housekeeping Management, Sales and Marketing Management, Technology Management, International Hotel Management, Supervisory Management, Leadership Management, Convention and Meeting Management, Human Resources Management, and Accounting.

For both paths, you may choose to pursue a university BA Honours Degree programme. The choice is entirely up to you, if you feel that you still need further training. Many colleges and universities – both in the UK and the US – recognise the London Hotel School’s programmes. As such, your courses will be credited if you choose to continue your studies.
